President Biden reverses Trump transgender military service ban

From Malcontentment Happy Hour, January 25, 2021

Despite his campaign promises to defend LGBTQIA rights in 2016, Trump made a series of decisions that gutted protections

The policy change reverses a decision from 2017 when then President Trump tweeted his decision to block transgender people from serving in the military without consulting with the Pentagon. The Pentagon did not keep records on how many service people were discharged due to the decision, upheld by the Supreme Court in 2019. President Biden, with the support of the Secretary of Defense, reversed the Decision on January 25, 2021.

Kesha Rodgers and Sara So of The Ally League discuss cancel culture

From Malcontentment Happy Hour, December 7, 2020

Kesha Rodgers and Sara So of The Ally League discuss cancel culture and the need for patience

Kesha Rodgers started The Ally League with her friend Sara So to help promote and support Black businesses and dismantle systemic racism. The events of 2020, including the resurgent Black Lives Matter movement and the disproportionate impact of COVID on the BIPOC community, created opportunity and hardship. As working moms, Rodgers and So realized that people wanted to support the Black community but didn’t have the time or resources to engage actively. The mission of The Ally League is to promote and support Black-owned businesses while enabling allies to learn about the available products. In this second part of our interview, Kesha and Sara talk about cancel culture and the need for patience.

Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan will not seek a second term

After a tumultuous year, Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan has announced that she will not be seeking re-election. Amid multiple calls for her resignation, she has seen her support wane, both inside and out of city hall. While enjoying some early successes, such as negotiating to bring the NHL back to Seattle, the mayor also faced challenges that many felt she was not up to handling. By the end of 2019 her leadership was being questioned, and on October 22, The Seattle LGBTQ Commission called for her resignation.

An area where most feel she failed includes addressing the civil unrest in Seattle in the wake of the death of George Floyd. Seattle was catapulted into the international spotlight when the Capitol Hill Occupy Protest, or CHOP, was formed. What she suggested would be a “summer of love” devolved into mismanaged chaos. The Seattle Police spread misinformation and brutalized protesters with excessive force.

There were two murders on the edge of CHOP, street fights with Proud Boys and Three Percenters, and no less than five documented incidents of drivers assaulting protesters by the end of July, resulting in one fatality and one severely injured. There remains controversy over who called for the abandonment of the East Precinct on June 8, 2020. Both the Mayor and now retired police chief Carmen Best deny making the decision. Political watchers have wondered aloud if the Seattle Police Officer’s Guild made the decision, which would indicate a collapse of oversight by the mayor and police leadership.

Durkan, who ran on a homeless advocacy platform and a more moderate approach to area politics, failed to deliver on most of those promises, including thousands of beds through tiny home villages and transitional housing. Even before the COVID or George Floyd protests, homelessness and street violence was worsening. Seattle currently has the third-largest homeless population in America, and during her time as mayor, the homeless population grew. Durkan and City Hall pushed for tax increases, spending over $1 billion a year on area homelessness with no measurable impact. Accusations of corruption overshadowed projects like low barrier housing at Licton Springs. Only the larger cities of New York and Los Angeles have a large unhomed population.

Another failed promise, Durkan signed the Policing and Community Safety Executive Order (PCSEO) earlier this year. Its purpose was to identify SPD response areas that could be transitioned to a civilian and community-based response. The PCSEO did not achieve any of the meaningful policy goals outlined by the mayor. In sharp contrast, Seattle decided to increase the operating budget for the coming year, amid outcries from the public.

Seattle will vote for a new mayor on November 2, 2021.

Hundreds celebrate president-elect Biden on Capitol Hill

With a stiff breeze blowing on a mostly cloudy afternoon, hundreds gathered at 10th and East Pine, celebrating the presumptive election win of Joe Biden. Revelers danced in the street while popping open champagne bottles, waving Biden-Harris signs and Black Lives Matter and pride flag.

five months ago spd was shooting rubber bullets and teargas at protesters, now there is a celebration.

Cars headed westbound on East Pine and stretched as far as the eye could see past the East Precinct, honking horns and waving at the crowd. Music played from a small sound system until a COVID-friendly mobile DJ arrived. About 30 minutes later, the Marshall Law Band came riding a trailer pulled by an SUV. As the sun broke through the clouds in the late afternoon, the band played a long set of music to a jubilant crowd.

Not everyone was pleased with the events unfolding this afternoon. Several familiar faces from the CHOP/CHAZ era, which protesters considered police informants, glowered and harassed some people. A group of protesters in black bloc arrived and burned an American flag outside of the Black Lives Matter mural. These incidents were small and didn’t gain much attention from the people celebrating.

Joe Biden won the 2020 national election with 290 electoral votes currently assigned to him. The states of North Carolina remains a tossup, Alaska is not deep enough in their vote count to declare a winner, and Georgia is having an automatic recount.
