President Joe Biden wipes $10K of student loan debt away for almost 43 million

[WASHINGTON, D.C.] – (MTN) Fulfilling his campaign trail promise, President Joe Biden announced his student loan forgiveness plan early Wednesday afternoon.

President Biden forgave or canceled the expected $10,000 in federal student loans for those who make less than $125,000 a year or $250,000 for married couples and heads of households. According to the Education Department, the relief is capped at the amount of a borrower’s outstanding eligible debt. In his Tweet, the president also extended the payment pause on federal student loans for “one last and final time” through December 31, 2022. But in one surprising move, President Biden also canceled an additional $10,000 for recipients of Pell Grants.

According to higher education expert Mark Kantrowitz, at least 9 million Americans could have their balances entirely cleared by Biden’s plan. More than 40 million Americans are in debt after perusing higher education, accumulating about $1.7 trillion. Biden’s plan for student loan forgiveness will cost the federal government an estimated $300 billion but could prove to be less than that, as most debt is rarely paid in full. In 2019, about half of borrowers were in repayment. Roughly 10 million Americans, 1 in 5 student debt holders, were in delinquency or default. The rest had applied for temporary relief, including deferments and forbearances, and this was before the pandemic relief payment pause was put in place.

Loan forgiveness is expected to go into effect on January 1, 2023. The White House fact sheet, mentioned those who meet the income requirements could fill out a simple application. There currently isn’t a date for when the application will open, but you can subscribe for notification at the Department of Education subscription page.

This initative has been a long time in the making and will help millions of Americans tackle their debt.

Congress moves to protect gay and interracial marriage post-Roe v. Wade decision

[Washington, D.C.] – MTN Last week, the House of Representatives passed the Respect for Marriage Act, legislation that would codify both same-sex and interracial marriage in a surprising bipartisan effort. If passed in the Senate, the bill would repeal the Defense of Marriage Act. The 1996 Clinton-age law defined marriage as a union between a man and a woman. In light of the Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v Jackson and overturning Roe v Wade, critics have admonished the Biden Administration and the Democratic Party for their failure to codify Roe in the past 50 years. And many are wondering if the overturning of Roe will be the wake-up call the party needs.

How Did We Get Here?

After Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas released an independent concurring opinion where he suggested the court “reconsider” and “correct the errors” in Obergefell, Griswold, and Lawrence, House Democrats reintroduced the Respect for Marriage Act. Despite most viewing interracial and same-sex marriage as settled laws, some Republicans expressed an interest in not codifying the recognition of same-sex and interracial marriage.

Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI) went on the record to say that while he feels the bill is unnecessary, but “…should it come to the Senate, I see no reason to oppose it.” The Supreme Court’s majority draft opinion on Dobbs leaked shortly before it overturned Roe v. Wade. In that month’s time, many were expecting the Biden Administration to step in with a solution. The White House elected to take no action. President Biden issued an executive order for abortion access and expansion under the protection of the 1987 Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act (EMTALA) two weeks after the Supreme Court’s ruling. Vice President Kamala Harris’s comments after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade didn’t help the situation.

In a recent interview, Vice President Harris was asked if Democrats failed by not codifying Roe in the past 50 years.

“We should have rightly believed, but we certainly believed that certain issues are just settled,” she responded. While some legal issues are “settled,” as Ms. Harris puts it, strengthening those institutions by making them laws could have prevented the Supreme Court from even considering Roe v. Wade.

Overturning Roe and limiting abortion access has been a leading cause for the Republican Party for the past 50 years. The threat of a post-Roe world was a reality that lawmakers should have considered.

Will They Wake Up in Time?

The Democratic Party is a house divided against itself that struggles in deciding how to tackle its core issues: abortion, police reform, gun reform, minimum wage, and other core planks of the current platform. For example, the Women’s Health Protection Act, a bill that would codify the protections granted in Roe v Wade and Cassey, passed in the House in 2021, The bill failed to pass in the Senate when it was put to a vote after the Politico leak. The final vote, 49 -51, drew lines in the sand, especially with Senator Joe Manchin (D.W.V.), who joined Republicans in voted against passing the bill, despite previous claims that he would support a woman’s right to choose.

Senators Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema (R-AZ) have made a name for themselves in opposing much of Biden’s legislative agenda. Both senators are opposed to ending the filibuster, the one thing many people on both sides of the debate see as preventing the codification of Roe. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi’s (D-CA) endorsement of pro-abortion Democratic candidate Henry Cullelar, added to the mixed messages from Washington.

There is a considerable rift between the younger and older members of the Democratic Party. Studies show the younger generation tends to be more progressive while the older generation is more moderate. Progressives such as Congressperson Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) have proposed expanding the Supreme Court and for Congress to repeal the Hyde Amendment. Biden is against expanding the Court but formed a bipartisan commission to study potential changes to the Court when he was elected. Even if Democrats could do away with the filibuster, the Biden Administration is concerned that the Supreme Court would overturn any legislation passed in Congress.

Man allegedly with bomb and claims to be part of a larger D.C. domestic terror plot surrenders

Update: Ray Roseberry, 49, has surrendered to Washington D.C. police

[WASHINGTON, D.C.] – (MTN) Washington D.C. police have evacuated the Supreme Court and the U.S. Capitol after a man in a black pickup truck parked near the Library of Congress and claimed he has a bomb big enough to take out “two-and-half blocks.”

A USA Today report stated that police were in active negotiations with the man to bring about “a peaceful resolution to the incident.” Police say they have identified the man, but have not released his name. The website Heavy.com identified the man as Ray Roseberry.

In a Facebook Live video, since removed, the individual makes a statement that vacillates from calm to angry. The man, who is white and appears to be in his 40s, claims he is from Alabama and is part of a larger group that has four more bombs in the United States Capitol. At one point, he implies that one bomb could be located close to the White House.

  • He claims the bomb is made from ammonium-nitrate, which is the same material that was used in the Oklahoma City Bombing in 1995
  • He showed in his video his vehicle full of shrapnel including coins, what appears to be ball bearings, and other metal debris
  • He made several demands to talk to Joe Biden directly
  • Claims he is a “good American” and a “Patriot”
  • Says “Democrats are killing America”
  • He railed about how pennies are made out of zinc, and blamed Joe Biden
  • He is holding a large metal can in his lap, and appears to be holding a device in his left hand attached to the can
  • Repeats he, “wants to go home by Sunday,” and how he promised his wife he would be home for dinner
  • He asks at one point, “where are all my American patriots? Don’t make a lair out of me.”
  • Claims he is acting to “get the revolution started”
  • Makes a statement to President Joe Biden, “Look here you little bitch. Some people doing some things now, and that’s the fucking South.”
  • At one point he claims his wife was aware of the plot, but then at another point claims he lied to his wife and told her he was going on a fishing trip
  • Makes another state about the bomb, “This was made by ya’ all Qaeda, and you better not forget that Joe.”

The Facebook Live lasted for 31 minutes, and at no time did he address and commenters on the video. He claims that he is part of a larger organization, and he was “picked for this.”

This is a breaking news story and will be updated.

SPD officers in Washington, D.C. during January 6 insurrection tentatively identified

[SEATTLE] – (MTN) Researchers have tentatively identified the names and backgrounds of the 6 Seattle police officers who attended the Stop the Steal rally that devolved into an attempt to stop the certification of the 2020 election. Crosscut and our researchers had identified three officers previously.

The six Seattle police officers who allegedly were in Washington, D.C., during the insurrection are:

  • Scotty Bach, Acting Lieutenant through January 6, 2021, now listed as Sergeant
  • Jacob Briskey, Sergeant, K9 Officer
  • Alexander Everett, Officer, previously identified
  • Jason Marchione, Officer, previously identified by Crosscut
  • Caitlin Rochelle, Officer, previously identified 
  • Michael Settle, Vice Unit, Acting Sergeant

SPD listed Scotty Bach as an Acting Police Lieutenant assigned to the Southwest Precinct on October 15, 2020. The data shows he was an Acting Lieutenant through January 6, 2021, and returned to the rank of Sergeant on January 7. Bach is currently under investigation by the OPA for three separate incidents. 

Sergeant Jacob Briskey has been the subject of multiple uses of force complaints, and the city of Seatle had to pay a $269,000 settlement in 2009. In that case, Romelle Bradford sued for being wrongly arrested by Briskey and being “roughed up,” per a Seattle Times report in 2008. The city appealed the finding and ultimately lost the case.

Alexander Everett and Caitlin Rochelle were previously identified as a married couple who went to the January 6 Stop the Steal Rally. Acting Chief Diaz suspended the couple with pay after other officers came forward and reported their activity in Washington, D.C. They were married in December 2020, and it is reported that the trip to hear Donald Trump speak was their honeymoon. 

Jason Marchione is assigned to the South Precinct, and Crosscut previously revealed his attendance at the insurrection on January 6. Marchione and Rochelle are coworkers who work on the same shift. Marchione has had six OPA complaints since he started with SPD in 2017, and almost half of the use of force claims against the officer have been made by Black people. In one case, a Black man claims that Marchione broke the man’s wrist during a “hard takedown.”

Michael Settle is an Acting Police Sergeant Detective specializing in human trafficking. Little is know about Settle beyond a single investigation in 2010. 

A court hearing was initially scheduled for April 2, 2021, to review a temporary injunction, but that hearing was declared moot. 

Andrew Myerberg, the director of the OPA, told NPR, that officers are entitled to their political views, and the investigation will look into whether SPD policy was violated. The OPA added that if the officers committed federal crimes, they would work together with federal investigators.

The OPA has 180 days to release its findings of the officer’s activities to the public. Those results would be published in June and early July of 2021.

Merrick Garland: Nominee for U.S. Attorney General

During the Judicial Committee hearing yesterday, Merrick Garland told Senators that he was shocked by videos of Black Americans being killed, but also pointed out that the eye-opening coverage and resulting protests could serve as a catalyst for finding remedies.

Biden’s nomination for US attorney general weathered questions from the Judicial Committee on Monday, including pointed, leading, and barbed questions from some of the hyperpartisan members. Merrick Garland is currently the chief judge of the D.C. Circuit and was famously nominated by President Obama to the Supreme Court, although Senator Mitch McConnell refused to allow that nomination a vote in the Senate—blocking the nomination. He has also previously worked within the Department of Justice, including a role as deputy assistant attorney general in the Criminal Division. In that role, he oversaw the high-profile domestic terrorism cases including the Oklahoma City bombing, Ted Kaczynski, and the bombing at the Centennial Park during the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta

Senator Tom Cotton (R-AR) questioned Judge Garland on racial issues from several directions during the hearing. Throughout, Garland maintained a firm stance, stating that he believes “discrimination is morally wrong. Absolutely.” Cotton continually returned to questions about racial issues. “Are you aware President Biden has signed an executive order stating his administration will affirmatively advance racial equity,” Cotton asked. “Not racial equality, but racial equity?”

Garland’s reply: “Yes. And I read the opening of that executive order, which defines equity as the fair and impartial treatment of every person, without regard to their status, and including individuals who are in underserved communities where they were not afforded that before.”

Cotton appeared preoccupied with a Trump-era case against Yale University, alleging admissions discrimination against white and Asian American students, which was dropped earlier this month by the current Department of Justice. Garland replied by stating, several times, that the statistics Cotton repeated could not be interpreted without the context and facts of the case.

Ted Cruz (R-TX), possibly seeking to find a positive sound bite for conservative audiences criticizing his ill-timed Cancun vacation, asked Garland about keeping the Department of Justice, something that the nominee has prioritized since being nominated. Cruz used his time to raise debunked conspiracy theories related to Eric Holder and already disproven allegations of the Department of Justice being used for political purposes under the Obama administration. Cruz did set aside some time to praise previous attorney general, William Barr while ignoring the fact that under Barr’s direction the Department of Justice was found to be directly used by the previous administration as a weapon against political opponents and to insulate Donald Trump and his allies.

In an exchange that Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO) likely didn’t expect, Garland responded to the question of defunding the police. “As you, no doubt know,” the nominee said, “President Biden has said he doesn’t support defunding the police, and neither do I.” The nominee went on to cite the horrors of the January 6 insurrection attempt and the attacks on officers during the violence as a reason to support law enforcement. More than 140 Capitol Police officers were injured during the assault on Congress that Hawley helped to incite.

“I do believe,” Garland continued, “that we do need to put resources into alternative ways of confronting some actors, particularly those who are mentally ill and those who are suicidal.”

Not all of the hearing was spent on partisan attacks, however, and some highlights did appear. Judge Garland:

  • Pledged to protect the Justice Department from political pressure
  • Vows the DOJ will pursue all leads in the investigation of the Capitol attack
  • Has reservations about the death penalty
  • Sees no reason to discontinue the Durham probe at this time
  • Highlights the mission of the Division of Civil Rights to protect the rights of the “most vulnerable members of our society.”

In an emotional moment during the hearing, Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) asked the nominee to share a private conversation they had about his family history involving hate and discrimination. Garland, clearly emotional and fighting back tears, related a brief anecdote. “I come from a family where my grandparents fled anti-Semitism and persecution. The country took us in and protected us. I feel an obligation to pay the country back.”

Garland stated in his remarks prior to the hearing, that equity and fairness are important to him. He went on to say, “that mission remains urgent because we do not yet have equal justice. Communities of color and other minorities still face discrimination in housing, education, employment, and the criminal justice system; and bear the brunt of the harm caused by the pandemic, pollution, and climate change.”

Ethan Nordean, also known as Rufio Panman, was due to make an initial appearance in U.S. District Court in Seattle on Wednesday afternoon, after he was charged in Washington, D.C.
