Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) announced on Twitter (X) that she is resigning on January 6, 2026, citing a laundry list of grievances in an almost 11-minute-long video.

Taylor Greene, 51, was elected to represent Georgia’s 14th Congressional District in November 2020 and has held office since January 5, 2021. She rose to prominence in the MAGA movement by embracing QAnon conspiracy theories, calling COVID-19 a hoax, and being against vaccines, suggesting the 9/11 attacks were a hoax, and praising Russian leader Vladimir Putin.

“I’ll be resigning from office with my last day being January 6, 2026, and I look forward to seeing many of you again sometime in the future,” Greene said at the end of her video.

“There is no plan to save the world, or a 4D chess game being played,” Greene added. “When common American people realize and understand that the political industrial complex of both parties is ripping this country apart, that not one elected leader like me is able to stop watching this machine from gradually destroying our country. And instead, the reality is that they are common Americans.”

Greene, who appeared to be reading a prepared statement, was calm as she explained her decision to her constituents. “I‘ve always represented the common American man and woman as a member of the House of Representatives, which is why I’ve always been despised in Washington, D.C., and just never fit in.”

In the lead-up to the October government shutdown, Greene has been increasingly vocal about growing inflation and how the American middle class is being squeezed. In tonight’s statement, Greene continued to carry that message. “The average American family can no longer survive on a single breadwinner’s income, as both parents have to work in order to simply survive. And today, many in my children’s generation feel hopeless for their future and don’t think they will ever realize the American dream…I raged against my own speaker and my own party for refusing to proactively work diligently to pass the plan to save Americans’ health care and protect Americans from outrageous, overpriced, and unaffordable health insurance policies.”

She spoke out against partisan politics, repeating that Republicans and Democrats share equal blame, while blasting Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) without calling him out by name. “…with almost one year into our majority, the legislature has been mostly sidelined. We endured an eight-week shutdown, wrongly resulting in the House not working for the entire time. And we are entering campaign season, which means all courage leaves, and only safe campaign reelection mode is turned on in the House of Representatives.”

Greene also highlighted her MAGA and self-professed Christian Nationalist credentials in the legislation that she’s supported over the last five years, shifting the blame to Speaker Johnson. “[E]very single day, my bills, which reflect many of President Trump’s executive orders like calling for a new census, counting Americans only to draw new districts, making English the official language of the U.S., making it a felony to medically [transition] a minor, and other bills like eliminating capital gains taxes on the sale of your primary home and eliminating H-1B visas, Just sit, they all said, collecting dust. That’s how it is for most members of Congress Bills. The speaker never brings them to the floor for a vote.”

She also warned the Republican Party that Americans aren’t stupid, and the GOP is heading toward defeat in the 2026 midterms. “The college degree they were told to earn only left them in debt with no big six-figure salary. They see more homeless people than ever on their own community streets. They can’t afford health insurance or practically any insurance, and they just aren’t stupid…I love my family way too much, and I do not want my sweet district to have to endure a hurtful and hateful primary against me by the president that we all fought for, only to fight and win my election. While Republicans will likely lose the midterms and in turn be expected to defend the president against impeachment after he hatefully dumped tens of millions of dollars against me and tried to destroy me.”

As the fight to release the Jeffrey Epstein files raged in Washington, Greene became more disillusioned with President Trump and the Republican establishment. On November 14, in a long post on Truth Social. Trump withdrew his support for Greene, hurling a stream of insults. “…all I see ‘Wacky’ Marjorie [Taylor Greene] do is COMPLAIN, COMPLAIN, COMPLAIN…I can’t take a ranting Lunatic’s call every day. I understand that wonderful, Conservative people are thinking about primarying Marjorie in her District of Georgia, that they too are fed up with her and her antics and, if the right person runs, they will have my Complete and Unyielding Support. She has gone Far Left, even doing The View, with their Low IQ Republican hating Anchors.”

The next day, Trump called her a traitor, writing on Truth Social, “Marjorie ‘Traitor’ Green [sic] is a disgrace to our GREAT REPUBLICAN PARTY!”

Speaking on CNN’s State of the Union with Dana Bash last Sunday, Greene called Trump’s post “extremely wrong,” adding, “And those were the types of words used that can radicalize people against me and put my life in danger.”

When asked about her own similar statements about political opponents, Greene said, “I think that’s fair criticism, and I would like to say humbly I’m sorry for taking part and the toxic politics. It’s very bad for our country.”

In tonight’s announcement, Congresswoman Greene leaned heavily into the Epstein scandal cover-up and Trump’s personal attacks. “Standing up for American women who were raped at 14 years old. Trafficked and used by rich, powerful men should not result in me being called a traitor and threatened by the president of the United States, whom I fought for…It’s all so absurd and completely unserious. I refuse to be a battered wife, hoping it all goes away and gets better. If I am cast aside by the president and the MAGA political machine and replaced by neocons, big pharma, big tech, military, industrial war complex, foreign leaders, and the elite donor class that can never, ever relate to real Americans, then many common Americans have been cast aside and replaced as well.”

Greene’s resignation will make the Republican majority in the House even thinner, with 218 Republicans and 213 Democrats.

Under Georgia law, the governor must issue a writ of elections within ten days of Greene’s resignation date of January 6, and a special election must be held within 30 days of the writ being issued. The 14th District is deeply red, and Democrats will have no reasonable chance to flip the seat.

However, Georgia law creates a dilemma for the Republican Party. Whomever is elected will either serve as a bridge to the November 2026 elections or immediately jump into campaign mode to face another election less than a year away to hold their seat.
